Carolinas Aviation Museum (CAM), with a mission to inspire, educate, and elevate the next generation to pursue careers in STEM, aerospace, and aviation, while inviting visitors to explore the vast contributions of aviation on our lives, economy and culture, has partnered with the Charlotte-Douglas International (CLT) Airport to develop a new innovation center to open in 2023.

Overview:
CAM is now seeking a new VP of Education at this exciting time of growth and opportunity. The VP of Education will leverage their skills in program design and implementation, community partnership building and collaboration, project-based learning, STEM education programming, community outreach, and career pathway development to advance CAM’s mission and community impact. The VP of Education will be a passionate and knowledgeable advocate for racially equitable access to STEM educational opportunities, the diversification of STEM-related industries and career pathways for marginalized communities, and economic development for Charlotte and the surrounding area.

This professional will need to be a high-level thinker with demonstrated ability to lead new initiatives from infancy to fruition and understand the Museum’s unique ability to inspire, elevate and educate. A successful candidate will bring experience as a skilled leader in building an education department and establishing programmatic goals and implementing programs along the educational continuum; from early childhood to career readiness. Continuity of Programming: This professional will possess the ability to seamlessly connect STEM programming with collections, history, and the new museum’s thematic experience. More specifically, the candidate will be able to tell the compelling stories of aviation, aerospace, and the related innovations through time and connect them to STEM education and careers.

Measurement: This professional will be able to develop and implement systems of measurement/assessments to track program efficacy, outcomes, impact, relevancy, and marketability with integrity and accurate reporting.

Duties and responsibilities:
Leadership
• Lead the development of the Museum’s education department. Provide innovative, visionary, and strategic operational planning and leadership for all Museum education and career development activities. Serve as an active and collaborative member of the President’s leadership team
• Lead the cultivation of effective partnerships with regional schools (specifically Title 1), local universities, community colleges, nonprofits, community programs, and corporations
• Be a passionate, visible, and informed advocate for CAM and engage with the broader community while positioning the Museum for improved educational outreach and accessibility
• Demonstrate knowledge of county/state and national educational standards, systems and priorities
• Exhibit a strong comfort level with communicating and collaborating with institutional leaders and educators in higher education and regional school systems
• Serve as a catalyst to CAM’s development as a hub for STEM careers and workforce development in North Carolina
• Contribute to the VP team to align Collections, Development, Marketing goals
• Serve as the key staff liaison to the Education/Program Committee
Program management and implementation
• Conduct program strategic planning, designing, implementation, and evaluation of all onsite and offsite program delivery
• Oversee Volunteer Program administration, communications, and reward system
• Develop and manage the annual education/program budget including revenue projections and performance reports
• Provide strategic vision, coordination, and management of the Museum’s educational priorities in partnership with the President and education consultants Establish a corporate advisory committee to serve as expert advisors and connectors for CAM’s vocational initiatives and STEM related career opportunities in North Carolina
• Serve as a visionary leader and coordinator of STEM early education to career placement opportunities by managing and creating partnerships with area employers, universities and aviation institutions
• Lead and implement data management, including tracking of program metrics, outcomes reporting, and overall program evaluation; number of volunteers, community partner relationships, visitor demographics and retention, etc
Carolinas Aviation Museum Vice President of Education
• Collaborate with regional school systems, Charter Schools and educational institution leaders to ensure program development aligns with education standards and addresses current educational attainment gaps in the region and state
• Plan, develop, coordinate, direct, and manage all education partner contracts, programmatic outreach events, STEM camps, and Honeywell’s Maker Space and STEM Career Lab, with an intentional focus on reaching diverse populations underrepresented in aerospace industries through project-based, experiential making and learning
• Coordinate the adoption and facilitation of possible high school STEM curriculum models connecting to regional CTE programs with careful consideration for creating accessibility for marginalized populations in all aspects of CAM career and educational programming
• Nurture ongoing and pre-existing community relationships with mindful consideration of corporate sponsors supporting educational or workforce development initiatives
• Develop a deep understanding of the Museum’s collections and thematic content. Collaborate closely with the Collections Department to ensure continuity and authenticity in program development. Conduct visitor/audience experiences development in coordination with the Collections Department. Participate in exhibition planning development to ensure education programming/content aligns with exhibit goals
Event management, marketing and planning
• Provide the full scope of program event information, content, and scheduling for the Museum’s marketing and advertising initiatives
• Coordinate the design/development of education/program collaterals with VP of Development & Marketing
• Collaborate across all Museum departments in the planning and coordination of educational events, seminars and workshops including management of outside vendors and/or contractors
• In conjunction with the marketing team, assist with the Museum’s Educator’s Guide and help with dissemination to appropriate school personnel within the Museum’s service region
Supervisory leadership
• Lead volunteer/docent engagement, training, and evaluations and all visitor engagement events
• Lead the recruitment, development, training, management, and reporting of the Education Team, performing timely performance assessments, affording them appropriate professional development and feedback, and ensuring the highest quality standards in program delivery
• Direct and coordinate the procurement and maintenance of all education and program equipment and materials
• Participate in grant writing as needed to promote education/programmatic goals

Qualifications:
• A bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree and experience in a museum setting are desirable
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, able to plan and execute strategic communications to advance educational and vocational initiatives, and build a community of stakeholders
• Five years of experience leading a career development or educational program. Experience in a nonprofit organization, informal science institution, cultural or educational institution, or equivalent preferred, with a working knowledge of the CMS school system. Experience with creating access for underserved communities is highly preferred
• Hands-on personality with ability to navigate and propel emerging programs and evolve programmatic direction
• Ability to create and lead inspiring educational content and activities, motivate volunteers, influence leaders and create innovative programs. Create and drive a successful entrepreneurial setting that prioritizes development of new audiences and community engagement. Proficiency in setting goals and analyzing data for effective program evaluation is a must
• Exceptional planning and organizational skills. Results- and detail-oriented with the ability to set and meet deadlines. Able to construct, articulate, implement and evaluate written education plans and budgets
• Commitment to a mission-based organization, community engagement, diversity, and a history of working effectively with all people irrespective of their economic status, ethnicity, gender, educational level, or sexual orientation
