The Tyler County Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, November 21, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. in the board offices located on Dodd Street in Middlebourne. All members of the BOE were present for the meeting as well as Superintendent Shane Highley.
Prior to the meeting the agenda was available and included the mission statement. The Mission of Tyler County Schools is to provide student-centered learning opportunities that ensure all students will learn to their potential and master the skills, ethical behaviors, and attitudes needed to be successful citizens in a 21st-century economy.
Superintendent Highley began the meeting informing the board that he would prepare a Proclamation of Employee Appreciation for their approval. The proclamation rewards the staff of Tyler County schools with an extra day off over Christmas break on December 21st.
Mr. Higley informed the board of a meeting that took place last week with the Boys and Girls club of Wetzel County. The hope is to start a boys and girls club in Tyler County. This organization would provide after school activities for students that need a place to go. The goal would be to have a facility for this club do use in serving the students of Tyler County.
The board approved the following Policy Reviews: Personnel Goals, Reduction in Force, Preferred Recall, Suspension and Dismissal, Non-rehiring of Probationary Personnel, Seniority Rights of Substitute Service Personnel, Administrative Lateral Movement, Classified Service Personnel Orientation, Staff Time Schedules, Professional Certification/Licensure, Extra Duty-Professional Personnel, Code of Ethics for Administrators, Non-school Personnel use as Chaperones, Use of Federal Funds for Tuition Assistance, Employee Code of Conduct, Staff Protection, Staff-Student Relations, Falsification of Reporting, Duty-Free Lunch and Daily Planning Period, Vacation Days for 261 Day Employees, and Summer School. The following trip request was approved. Matt Jennings requested permission to take the TCHS Band to see the WVU Marching Bands KeyNotes Concert at the WVU Creative Arts Center in Morgantown on Monday, December 5, 2022. Bus transportation was also requested.
Other requests included Amanda Gist, Education Student at WVU-P, requested permission to fulfill field placement requirements for her Education Courses with Tyler County schools. The board approved the request.
The board approved employing Susan Gilbert as Homebound Instruction Teacher, countywide, effective immediately. Also, several individuals were employed to help cover vacant classes during lunch and planning as requested by administration. Brenda Matthews, Stefanie Suter and Ashley Cunningham will be working at TCMS. Zachary Heasley, Susan Gilbert and Jennifer Stephens will serve at TCHS, and Tanya Wright will help fill the role at SES.
Under resignations the board accepted the resignation of Tyler Consolidated Head Football Coach Ryan Walton, effective immediately and Gary Haggerty, TCHS Athletic Trainer effective November 22.
On a motion by Larry Thomas the board went into Executive Session at 7:27 p.m. for a discussion of personnel. They returned at 8:05 p.m. No action was taken by the board.
Following the approval to pay the bills the meeting was adjourned. The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Tyler County Board of Education is Monday December 5, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. at the Board of Education office located on Dodd Street in Middlebourne.
