1965 marked a significant milestone in space exploration. For the first time, humans ventured outside their spacecraft while in orbit. This groundbreaking feat was achieved by both Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov and American astronaut Ed White, who opened the hatches of their respective spacecrafts to float hundreds of kilometers above the Earth.
The Soviet Union’s Masterstroke
Prior to the first manned flight of the Gemini program, the Soviet Union made a significant leap forward with Alexei Leonov’s spacewalk. The Voskhod capsule which carried Leonov was more advanced than its predecessors, capable of holding up to three cosmonauts and equipped with an airlock system to facilitate a spacewalk. This airlock system, named Volga, was an ingenious inflatable mechanism. However, the Voskhod program was seen as rushed, offering no room for evolutionary development.
Alexei Leonov’s Historic Spacewalk
The world’s first spacewalk commenced as per plan on March 18, 1965. Leonov floated near the capsule for eight minutes, setting a precedent for future extravehicular activities. Despite the success, Leonov faced difficulties during his spacewalk. His spacesuit swelled in certain areas and became rigid, making his re-entry into the capsule a challenge. These experiences were not disclosed by the Soviets at the time.
The American Response
The American Gemini program astronauts had to demonstrate their ability to perform extravehicular activities safely and reliably, a crucial step towards landing on the moon. The Gemini IV mission, launched on June 3, 1965, successfully reached orbit without any issues. Unlike the Voskhod, the Gemini capsule was depressurized for the first American spacewalk.
Ed White, faced numerous issues with his hatch but managed to float a few meters away from Gemini for 23 minutes, using a handheld oxygen jet for maneuvering. Despite the challenges, White’s spacewalk instilled confidence in the American space agency about the possibility of safely working outside a spacecraft.
Progress and Evolution
In the ensuing months and years, the United States significantly refined their spacewalking capabilities. The trials and tests in the Gemini program paved the way for the long and demanding lunar surface expeditions that were to follow. The Soviet Union, on the other hand, did not perform significant spacewalks until 1977, over 12 years after Leonov’s pioneering mission.
