E-commerce and tech giant Amazon is reportedly going to cut jobs of about 18,000 employees which would account to 6% of its total workforce. The shocking development comes after Amazon CEO Andy Jassy floated a staff note earlier on Wednesday this week, and gave more insight on the “workforce reduction” plan which will largely impact the company’s e-commerce and human resources organisation.
“This year’s review has been more difficult given the uncertain economy and that we’ve hired rapidly over the last several years.,” the somber note read, shedding light on what the future holds for the company and thousands of its employees. “Between the reductions we made in November and the ones we’re sharing today, we plan to eliminate just over 18,000 roles,” the note read, adding that “Amazon Stores and PXT organizations”, would be affected the most.
It should be noted that Amazon had started letting go of employees as early as November, with professional social-media platform LinkedIn flooded with stories of those who were let go. In his memo, Andy Jassy mentioned that since a company’s employees leaked the termination information, they have decided to share the news publicly.
Amazon has already shed over 1,50,000 employees in 2022, a year where Meta, Twitter and Salesforce also let go of thousands of employees.
The Facts of the Matter

Amid such uncertainties, tech giant Amazon recently announced that 18,000 employees will be laid off in the coming weeks, a process that will begin on January 18. The announcement came as a form of memo penned by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy.
“This year’s review has been more difficult given the uncertain economy and that we’ve hired rapidly over the last several years,” the note read.

18,000 Roles To Be Eliminated
“Between the reductions we made in November and the ones we’re sharing today, we plan to eliminate just over 18,000 roles. Several teams are impacted; however, the majority of role eliminations are in our Amazon Stores and PXT organizations,” the note further stated.
While the company, like most others, make such announcements after speaking to the affected people Amazon chose to publicly announce the massive layoff.
Employee had Leaked Info Earlier
The memo stated that as one of the company’s employees leaked the information, it was better “to share this news earlier so you can hear the details directly” from the CEO.
In his memo, Amazon CEO said that the company would be providing severance package and healht benefits to the affected employees. He also remained positive that the company will be “inventive, resourceful, and scrappy” at a time when it is not hiring expansively and conducting massive layoffs.

First Phase Began Last Year
The move comes after the first wave of the layoff by Amazon was reported in the end of 2022. In November, it was reported that the company will be conducting its largest ever mass layoff, and was planning to eliminate at least 10,000 job roles.
Employees from Amazon’s Devices and Services group, and employees who worked in Amazon Robotics, Amazon Lab126 and Amazon Luna, were the most impacted.
