FLINT, MI — There will be five new members on the Flint Board of Education starting next year.
Newcomers beat out the existing board president and sitting board appointees during the Tuesday, Nov. 8 election, according to unofficial results from Genesee County.
Four candidates of the five-person slate were elected — Dylan Luna, Melody Relerford, Terae King Jr. and Michael Clack — alongside longtime community activist Claudia Perkins.
Perkins, Relerford and Luna were all elected to full six-year terms on the board. They were the top three vote-getters in the race for full terms against current board members Linda Boose, Chris Del Morone, and board president Carol McIntosh.
Clack overwhelmingly took the partial term ending in 2024 and was the only school board candidate to earn more than 10,000 votes. He bested three other candidates including incumbent Allen Gilbert.
King won the partial term ending in 2026 over Donyele Darrough by just under 1,200 votes.
This election shifted the majority power on the Flint board as previously expected. The newly-elected slate of Luna, Relerford, King and Clack will start on Day 1 with four of the seven votes on the school board.
Relerford, who was the highest vote-getter among the field of full term candidates, is also expected to be appointed by the Genesee Intermediate School District to begin immediately, since there is currently an empty seat on the board yet to be filled.
Trustees Joyce Ellis-McNeal and Laura MacIntyre are the only two members of the board whose seats were not up for a vote in November.
The Flint district’s next board of education meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Accelerated Learning Academy, 1602 S. Averill Ave.
