Job Specification:
The University of Johannesburg is actively recruiting for a Lecturer in the Department of Finance and Investment Management to join the Investment Management stream. The Department of Finance and Investment Management is a dynamic department offering a variety of qualifications at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The Bachelor of Commerce in Finance and the Bachelor of Commerce in Investment Management (Honours), offered by the Department of Finance and Investment Management, are affiliated with the CFA Institute. The College of Business and Economics is also affiliated with the CAIA association through the programmes offered by the Department of Finance and Investment Management.
Currently the focus of the Investment Management stream, which the successful candidate will join, is purely Investment Management. However, as there is a shift towards 4IR and the use of ‘big data’ and machine learning, which impacts the way in which investment management decisions are made, the successful candidate will need exposure to software such as Python. In addition, to avail ourselves of the many synergies that exist between the Investment Management and Quantitative Finance streams, the successful candidate will also require a background in Maths.
Duties:
The incumbent will be expected to:
- Lecture at under and postgraduate level in the Investment Management discipline with special reference to Equity asset valuation, Fixed-income analysis, Alternative investments and Derivatives instruments and markets and Portfolio Management.
- Conduct research in the field of investment and finance related topics and regularly publish in accredited academic journals.
- Participate in identified community outreach projects.
- Perform administrative duties as instructed by the HOD or Programme Leader.
- Supervise both Honours and Masters students.
- Participate in mentorship programmes, in particular, relating to the CFA Research Challenge.
- A commitment to pursue further studies towards a PhD.
Minimum requirements
- A Master’s Degree (NQF 9) in a Finance or Investment Management related field.
- An NQF level 8 qualification in Investment Management.
- Working knowledge of advanced Finance Software including Python, Eviews, VBA, Bloomberg/Reuters, Refinitiv, IRESS.
- Previous lecturing experience in the relevant subject disciplines.
- An understanding and interest in financial modelling to be applied to the development of trading and investment strategies both in practice and to further curriculum development and research within the Department of Finance and Investment Management
