Dear Editor,
Here’s what President Eisenhower said: “Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in a vital sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.”
So why are we firing rockets to the moon and arguing about student debt?
Actually, I wonder if some of those who are working on the rockets received, as I did, a virtually free college education. Thirty-nine countries do, including Russia, Poland, France, Germany, all of Scandinavia, Mexico, Argentina — the list goes on and on. After World War II, the GI Bill (not available to Black servicemen) proved that education reduces poverty. It is time for colleges to cut costs and citizens to step up: Support free college education for all!
