Today, the Federal Communications Commission voted to approve a Second Report and Order, Second Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, and Waiver Order to shield consumers from illegal robotexts. The proposed rules facilitate blocking of illegal robotexts, codify do-not-call rules for texting, and close a loophole that allows spam callers to flood consumers with unwanted robocalls and texts. Public Knowledge commends the Commission for continuing to fight for and protect consumers.

“These rules are a real win for anyone who hates dealing with spam and scams, and that’s pretty much everyone. The FCC has been searching for more ways to protect consumers from spam and scams and closing up these loopholes is a great way to do that. Public Knowledge and our allies advocated strongly for the FCC to put a stop to the illegal practices many lead generators were using, and now the Commission has done just that.
“Blocking spoofed text messages from numbers that shouldn’t be in use, codifying do-not-call protections for text messages, and clarifying the existing requirements for consumer consents are all actions that should significantly reduce the amount of unwanted calls people are getting.
“We thank the FCC for acting to shield consumers from this never-ending barrage of harassment.”
