Why Does Communication Matter in the Workforce?

Employee engagement is a significant force behind the success of any company, regardless of its size. But without regular communication and collaboration, employees are less likely to remain engaged in their work. In a study that included over 400 large businesses, evidence indicated that companies are losing more than $60 million per year to poor communication. Additionally, over a quarter of those interviewed noted that poor communication was a critical factor in missed deadlines.

Those who work remotely can also be impacted by poor communication. Feeling disconnected from the team or unsure of where to turn for support can be stepping stones to overall dissatisfaction in a role.

While it may seem like offering access to an instant messaging or email platform is enough to keep the lines of communication open, it’s unlikely that these efforts will be enough. Your company culture should be rooted in open lines of communication across teams and departments.

The Importance of Collaboration and Communication

One of the key reasons to invest in efforts to enhance communication between remote members of your workforce is the opportunity to build trust. All relationships take work, and that includes those that maintain professional boundaries. The way your team members interact with one another will influence the success of the department and the company overall. Every member of the team should trust the others and feel comfortable sharing ideas and making decisions together.

Remote work environments often bring unique difficulties, requiring a different approach to solving problems. Discussing solutions and figuring out how to achieve shared goals is easier with efficient communication methods readily available.

The social impact of working remotely also can’t be ignored. Offices are social places, and many people who went remote for the first time struggled with the lack of interaction with their coworkers. Even if your team can’t interact in person, consider ways to get everyone together for the social benefits.

Incorporate company values and culture topics regularly

It’s easy to forget about the company values if someone only saw them once when hired. And if an employee isn’t in an office where such information is readily accessible, the values are unlikely to be top of mind. Think about how you can incorporate the vision and values, as well as the company culture whenever possible.

Promote transparency

Effective communication requires transparency. Employees may not feel like they can trust or talk to their coworkers or supervisors if they aren’t sure where the company is headed or what they are working toward. Establish a culture where everyone on the team is valued, heard, and respected.

Host regular company-wide meetings

When teams can come together, even virtually, to learn from leaders and cheer on each other’s accomplishments, they’re more likely to feel engaged in their work. Implement regular events for the entire company that support this need.

Support social needs

Allow a few minutes at the start or end of a meeting to catch up and share. Schedule online events where coworkers can chat and enjoy one another’s company. Host casual conversations between company leaders and employees to get to know one another and feel more supported.

Establish virtual ‘water coolers’

Depending on what technology your company uses to communicate, you may be able to set up virtual spaces where people can talk about things that aren’t related to work. For example, establish a channel focused on what team members are currently watching on TV or the books they have in their queue.

Create a mentorship program

Offering opportunities for mentorship can go a long way in boosting engagement, satisfaction, and retention rates. Explore which members of your team might benefit from a mentor and look for opportunities to form relationships with higher-ups in the company. You could also consider spending a portion of your budget to allow for in-person training sessions with mentors.

By taking an active approach to the success of remote teams, you can help every member feel appreciated and seen. Implementing these tips could be the solution to feelings of loneliness and isolation, disconnect, and frustration among those who don’t interact with their team members in person.
